  • Abstract:

It would perhaps be obvious to recognize in the frequent recurrence of the cricket in the poetry of Juan L. Ortiz an emblem of the poet as the singing subject: who, in the silence of the landscape, imposes the sovereignty of all that he sings. It has been repeatedly said that the poetry of Ortiz is a poetics of naming; but not of a taxonomic naming, a naming that incorporates what is silence, what is open, what is incomplete and enigmatic in the naming. It is about a work that, flowing for nearly sixty years in an attempt to grasp something of what is permanent, it may only be evoked by making hearing the sound of silence, it makes precisely of this very little mentioned word a musical tribute to silence. The cricket, like the poet that transcribes its voice, maps the territory where its singing is projected. This paper will try to suggest a tentative outline of this cartography.
