  • Abstract:

Mathematics and computation have become essential in understanding various areas of the biosciences. Students of careers in those areas study mathematics, but they show difficulties in effectively applying this knowledge and capabilities to specific problems. In this context, The Workshop on Mathematical and Computational Modeling in Biosciences was proposed in 2015, aimed at undergraduate students in biosciences. Its objective was to consolidate and enhance the mathematical culture that students acquired in their basic courses. Activities were proposed in a workshop mode, in which classical mathematical models in biology that can be studied qualitatively are presented, and their dynamics analyzed through computational simulation. At the end of the workshop, each student had to elaborate a project that implied original knowledge conceived based on what was acquired by each of them in the course. This article describes the experience (2015-2019), systematizing the teacher's appreciation, and the students' opinions concerning their expectations at the beginning and along the workshop, in addition to their general assessment based on the learning achieved, and within the framework of their undergraduate training. For doing this, students' opinions about teaching approaches and methodologies were investigated, as well as the course content. In general, the students who attended the workshop have done so with great interest, both in the contents that are worked on it and in the coordination between the different disciplines. Students think such coordination could not be achieved in the other undergraduate courses of their respective careers. Besides, the students emphasize the importance of learning and applying a programming language, as well as mathematical modeling, to the different biological situations studied.
