  • Abstract:

The Cape Verdean Creole language was formed immersed in a particular sociocultural and linguistic context which shaped it according to the emerging communicational needs in the Archipelago. Suitable for the daily life of Cape Verdeans, Creole is a cultural and linguistic expression of the Cape Verdean speaker itself, representing it as belonging to the Archipelago. We present, in this study, a discussion about the relevance of the rise of the Cape Verdean Creole language, as well as an argument about the importance of its officialization. From this perspective, we will approach the theme in the light of linguistic policies, based on concepts of language, culture and identity. Considering the bilingual scenario like that of Cape Verde, it is important to promote reflections that enable the legal valuation of a language that has survived under a view that misjudged it and, at times, underrated it, in the sense that Creole is resisting and asserting itself in an environment that does not have it as an official language.
